Search Engine Submission

Search Engine Submission is the process of submitting your website to the major search engines so that they know you exist. In most cases your website does not have to be manually submitted to the search engines if it was developed properly and has all its page titles and meta tags in order. Having your page titles and meta tages properly set up is a crucial step and one that is often over looked by many web designers and developers. Search engines use these tags to figure out what your site is about and to then categorize it accordingly in their databases. The leading search engines use spiders or robots that crawl the internet scanning websites and the meta tags on websites. They index and store those tags and information about websites in their databases. Once your website is indexed your site will be found organically by searchers looking specifically for your site. Making sure your website is indexed with the major search engines is the first step before tackling search engine optimization.

However, there are instances where the spider will have trouble finding a site and thus unable to index it. It can happen for a few reasons:

  1. Your site is not linked to by any other site that the spider is visiting.
  2. Links to your site are either disabled or not effective.
  3. The spider has tried visiting but now has given up probably because of a spider trap on your site that you're unaware of.

Manually submitting a site should be a last resort because search engines prefer to find a site naturally through the use of their spiders. If after addressing and correcting the possible reasons above your site still isn't naturally indexed, then and only then do we even consider manually submitting your site to the search engines.
